Directories began to appear in Ireland in the 18th Century. Two of the first include Peter Wilson’s in Dublin in 1751 and Ferrar’s Directory of Limerick in 1769. By the mid 19th century all-Ireland directories were in publication. One of the best knows is the work of Alexander Thom which is still published to this day. Thom’s Irish Almanac and Official Directory first appeared in the early 1840s. These two listings are taken from the 1852 publication and are the only mention of the Buggy name.[1] One is for a priest in Clonaslee, Co. Offaly and the other is for the Clerk and Returning Officer of Castlecomer Union in Co. Kilkenny.
