I have compiled the numbers of Buggy deaths listed in the 19th century Civil Registration Indexes for Ireland.[1] In total the deaths of 239 Buggy’s were registered between the years 1864-1899 inclusive. The majority of these deaths were reported in the civil registration districts that cover the counties of Kilkenny and Laois (Queens).
Civil registration districts were formed from Poor Law Unions. The PLU’s were based on market towns and their catchment areas. As a result civil registration districts can cover land in more than one county. Athy, below, is a good example. It is a town in county Kildare, a county not particularly associated with the Buggy name. However, it is near the border with Laois and a considerable part of the Athy civil registration district covers an area in east Laois.
Kilkenny – 56 Castlecomer – 53 Abbeyleix – 44 Athy – 29 Waterford – 13 Mountmellick – 12 Dublin North – 6 Callan – 5 Carlow – 5 Dublin South – 5 Enniscorthy – 3 Thomastown – 2 Limerick – 1 Omagh – 1 Parsonstown – 1 Nenagh – 1 Rathdown – 1 Urlingford – 1
TOTAL – 239
