This is the first in a number of posts that will give an overview of newspaper articles where people with the Buggy name are mentioned. They come from a number of states and cover decades from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
San Francisco, California – 1896 Joseph Santry, a former employee of the Ingleside Racetrack was arrested after being accused of stealing $80 from his co-worker Patrick Buggy[1]
Brooklyn, New York – 1894 Edward Buggy filed a lawsuit against the Brooklyn Heights Railroad Company and was looking for damages of $10,000. The case was heard before Justice Cullen at the Supreme Court in Brooklyn. Buggy was driving across a street on 4 October 1893 and was struck by a trolley and thrown to the ground. His horse was killed and his rig destroyed. [2]
Brooklyn, New York – 1892 Six people, including a Michael Buggy, were arrested in the twenty second police precinct for violating health laws by keeping pigs in the city limits. They are arraigned before Justice Tighe in the Butler Street Court on 29 September 1892 before being remanded in custody.[3]
Brooklyn, New York – 1889 John Buggy, 52, of 32 Main Street, fell down a flight of stairs at his residence on Monday 27 May 1889. He received an injury to his forehead which was attended to by Ambulance Surgeon Horan.[4]
Brooklyn, New York – 1872 An article was published in the Brooklyn Eagle on 7 November 1872 commenting on the longevity of some of the residence of the Fifth Ward in Brooklyn. One of those written about was a John Buggy, age 77, “who still strives on through life in John Street.”[5]
